Medication
Many individuals with ADHD suffer with symptoms which can make life feel overwhelming and challenging. Although medication cannot ‘cure’ ADHD it can help to improve these troublesome symptoms.
ADHD medication works by increasing levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine and noradrenaline. These chemicals help improve communication between the nerve cells in the brain, making your mind a more cohesive and calmer place to live in. Not only can this elevate your focus, concentration and your mood, but it can also reduce hyperactivity and impulsive behaviours.
In the UK there are 5 types of medication that can prescribed for ADHD.
- Methylphenidate
- Lisdexamfetamine
- Dexamfetamine
- Atomoxetine
- Guanfacine
The idea of being on medication can feel daunting, but our lead ADHD Nurse Specialist and Nurse Prescriber, Terri will talk you through all the different medication options in detail, helping you to understand and decide what is best suited to your needs. The comfort and safety of our clients is extremely important to us so we will ensure that this is the most suitable course of action for you.
If you decide to proceed with this method of treatment, we will begin with an appointment where we will discuss your medication options and offer you a prescription based on your individual needs and symptoms.
When starting a new medication, it is crucial to attend follow up appointments every 3/4 weeks to ensure the medication is the best fit for you. Medication changes are sometimes necessary to achieve the most desired outcome, so on average people require 3-4 follow up appointments.
Following this we will have annual reviews which are mandatory when prescribing ADHD medication.
NHS referral
An ADHD diagnosis with the NHS can take years to obtain, and it can be an arduous process. This is the main reason so many people decide to seek out a private practice, especially when they are interested in taking medication as a form of treatment. Accessing medication privately can become very expensive, but this is why our Nurse Specialist will refer you back to your GP with your diagnostic report and a Shared Care Agreement which is in line with NHS NICE guidelines and is fully recognised and accepted within the NHS. Following this, you will be able to buy your prescribed ADHD medication at the standard NHS price.
